All right, I can’t say I’ve tasted all the burgers in the world, but I’ve done a pretty good job.  I’ve sampled burgers on five different continents.

What I can tell you with certainty is that the best burgers I’ve ever had are around the corner from where I live now.  So, in the absence of any international travels this past month (kids had exams – blame it on that), I made sure to head over to Duke’s with my friend Mel.

Duke’s is located in the rather trendy Greenside neighbourhood in Johannesburg.  They make hamburgers and hamburgers.  Okay, they do serve salads, but if you’ve got the option of a vegetarian burger or a salad, you should really just get a burger.

When I pulled in the other day, I had let a year or two slip past since my last visit.  So, rather unsurprisingly, I had both forgotten that the back of the restaurant feels like a garden.  And, business has apparently taken off since my previous visit – every single table has a reservation sign on it for the evening.  Fortunately, that Saturday we’d gotten hungry somewhere between lunch and dinner, so we managed to beat the rush.

Sitting in the cosy garden on a warm winter’s day (this is South Africa, after all), we soon discovered that making a decision was not going to be easy.  We managed to order wine with little trouble, but then we faced extraordinary burger options.  Eventually, I went in for the Fidel Castro burger

(pictured above), which really isn’t as hot as their two chillies suggest (but then I’ve been adding some serious hot sauce to my food lately).  Mel ordered the Thelma & Louise.

While we waited for our food to arrive we discussed the importance of complimenting people when they deserve it.  That’s not as random as it seems; I’d called out praise to a stranger in the restaurant because her shirt was beautiful.  And then our delightful and attentive waitress Connie (see how that compliment thing is working already) brought us our food.

Unbelievable.  You should probably syllabate that to get closer to the enunciation I have in my head.  My burger was that delicious.

Truly, the burgers were that good.  Even the salads were scrummy.  (Not that you have to get a salad, they do have chips if you want to eat your burger properly.)  Mel and I both finished our burgers which is a little extraordinary for the pair of us.  And, just as the sun set, we headed out, relinquishing our table to the clever people who’d booked in advance.  Someday soon, those smart people will be us.  There’s not a chance I can go another year without a Duke’s burger.  Nor should you.
