We are still enjoying the blazing colors of autumn but there is no denying that winter is coming with shorter days and longer, cooler nights, and this year, bloody earthquakes! This is enough to cause a person to hunger after a few treats. The nights are indeed dark and full of terrors! Good food and wine will not make the quakes go away, but at least they act as a distraction.

With this in mind the Tall Guy (TTG) and I headed to nearby Foligno with a couple of friends to try a restaurant we had been meaning to go to for, well, for several years. We are so spoilt for choice that some good ones get overlooked repeatedly.

Ristorante Vesuvio is in a rather nondescript building on the edge of town that also houses the Foligno Holiday Inn above the ground floor. There is little to recommend it from the outside, but that is often the case in Umbria and other parts of Italy. Restauranteurs don't always see the need to waste effort on the last style decor, so we have learned to discount appearance as a factor when choosing a place to eat. We rely on the recommendations of others and avoid anything in a touristy setting unless it has been vouched for. When all else fails, go where there is a crowd if you can get in.

Seriously, using crowds of Italian diners as your guide on where to eat is one time when being a follower is better than being a leader.

It was clear all was well once we walked inside. The tables were elegantly dressed in white linen. It works for me every time and unlike other countries, the use of linen tables clothes does not necessarily signify expensive. In the case of this restaurant, a fish main came in at €13. If you had three courses and wine it would start to get expensive, but once I saw the size of my fish dish, I was thrilled I had decided to just have a main.

I had the sea bream parcel which came with shellfish and tomatoes. It was simple, delicately flavored and substantial, being a whole fish.

TTG thumbs-upped the pizza he opted for - the house special, a Vesuvius. And our dining companions from nearby Montefalco were also pleased with their fish dishes. We had a good bottle of white wine from Le Marche and a couple of side dishes to share and the final bill was €43 per couple.

I am eager to go back, perhaps not on a weekly basis but soon. I might be tempted to avoid the mussels in future as they were a little gritty. I am told this was just bad luck, as other trusted foodie friends had not had this problem. Vesuvio is also open for lunch between 12.00 and 3.30 every day. It is most assuredly NOT a tourist venue, but not difficult to find with phone or car based GPS systems.
