I’ve never seen my kid eat so much.  Even when I took him out for Japanese recently, he gave up the count early.  And then, I took him to Rocomamas.  It was a bit of a fluke; he was not really meant to enjoy the delicious burgers with us there.  But, with his brother off at camp and my boyfriend craving it to the point of non-negotiation, that’s where we went.

It’s not that the kids were never going to get to RocoMamas, just that I was a bit selfish about the place; I’ll admit it.  And, I was craving a Jack Black beer (not to mention a burger and wings), so it all worked out.  Because their burgers are that good.

But let’s be clear about something from the start, RocoMamas is out of place in Joburg.  I don’t mind it being here, of course, because it’s one of my favourites.  But it’s a cross between Midwest USA and Cape Town (and no, I didn’t know that was possible before).  Its genius is keeping it simple, focusing on a few thing they do really well.  That’s burgers, wings, ribs and fries.  And you tick what you want on a little menu pad.

As we arrived on a Wednesday night, we managed to snag the last available table, and I promptly ordered a beer.  And, since my last visit to this relatively new establishment, they’d installed Jack Black on draught, so I knew I was in for a good evening.

Then it was a process...  What on earth would I have on my burger and how would I manage to neglect the wings knowing the burgers are generous, and the fries addictive.  There was nothing we could do about it; we all had to have burgers, wings and fries.  If we could have managed the ribs on top of that, we probably would’ve tried.  The prices aren’t prohibitive, which means you’re really only limited by your stomach – which, apparently, was only barely applicable to us.

My ten year old managed to polish off his burger plus two wings and a handful of fries.  (He dutifully saved a few wings for his lunch the next day.)  He was so into his food that he had smeared sauce on his face without realising it, and just kept going, pronouncing RocoMamas as one of the best places in Joburg.  I, of course, second that.

And if you’re ever in the area, you really should give it a try.  Now that my son knows about it, you may just find us there too.  Just so you know, they don’t take reservations, so if you’re headed that way over the weekend, you’ll want to head out early.  But, I’ll save you a seat at my table.
