I absolutely loved my time in Thailand. During the course of the nine months I lived and worked in Thailand I developed my own routines and adapted to the fairly relaxed Thai culture. Within Sukhothai there were a number of restaurants that I visited regularly and, of all of these spots, the S&N Coffee House was my absolute favorite.

The S&N Coffee House is one of the few air-conditioned restaurants in Sukhothai and, to be honest, it probably isn’t the most immersive dining experience for tourists. Yet for locals and tourists looking for a relaxing and comfortable meal, this is the perfect place to go. It offers both an English and Thai menu as well as free WiFi and access to computers.

Food at the S&N Coffee House is reasonably priced: it’s more expensive than street food but it’s cheaper than an upscale restaurant. Its menu is comprised of a mix of Thai and Western food, though I almost always ordered Thai food. My friend, however, sampled their pizzas and noted that while they don’t quite meet American standards they do make for a decent substitute. My favorite dishes at the S&N Coffee House were the pineapple fried rice, the chicken & cashew nuts, and the corn nuggets. I also loved the restaurant’s extensive selection of iced coffees, smoothies, and milkshakes. Not once did I enter this coffee house and not order a fancy, yet relatively inexpensive drink. At least once a week I would treat myself by ordering a chocolate chocolate chip milkshake or an iced mocha. For me, at least, there was nothing more relaxing than walking into a swanky little café, enjoying an air-conditioned and mosquito-free zone, sipping on a delightfully tasty drink, and reading a book.

Yet the factor that most differentiated S&N Coffee House from other restaurants and cafes in the area was the friendliness of the staff. Though there was a huge language barrier between me and the waitresses in the restaurant, I couldn’t help but feel like we developed a bond. They always smiled when I walked in and looked genuinely happy to see me. Unlike some of the restaurants in the area they never looked irritated when they had to service just one lone farang and they certainly never leered at me like some of the male employees at other restaurants.

All in all, I have such positive memories of the S&N Coffee House. It was one of the few places in the world that I developed enough familiarity with to feel completely comfortable with and completely at ease in. Sometimes when I’m in a bustling and unfamiliar restaurant in America, I become nostalgic for the peaceful and casual atmosphere of the S&N Coffee House. I miss everything from the unrushed yet prompt nature of the staff to the inviting décor to the Thai food. While I cannot assert that visiting this restaurant will elicit such strong feelings for others as it did for meal, I can promise that I will provide a solid and affordable dining experience.
