I haven’t been to Basel for 13 years.  Every step I took from Barfüsserplatz to Marktplatz scratched a little deeper into my memory, and I felt as though I was stepping into a dream.  The crisp, cold air reminded me that I wasn’t imagining anything.  I was back in Basel, a city I love so much that I can easily picture myself living there.

But, even as I recalled the way the streets looked and felt, I was anxious to get to the Marktplatz to see the red facade of the Rathaus (town hall).  I had been told it had been cleaned and restored, and I was absolutely eager to see it.

So, as we stepped into the Marktplatz, and the Rathaus rose in front of my eyes, I knew it was going to be difficult to tear myself away.  The square was surprisingly busy with traders and shoppers, and perhaps a few more awe-struck visitors besides me.  And after crawling around the square and peaking into the public rooms of the Rathaus, it was time for coffee.

We crossed the square and found ourselves seated upstairs at the Schiesser Tea Room with windows that faced the beaming (and truly clean) red bricks across the square.

The tea room is upstairs from a very Swiss confiserie (chocolates and dessert creations).  And, the view was marvellous, but we did have somewhere we needed to be.  We had to content ourselves with coffee rather than the ice creams, cakes and chocolates we were all somewhat secretly drooling over.  But it was okay.  We could have popped downstairs for a macaron or outside for some roasted chestnuts or perhaps some of the market wares, but feasting on the view was enough for the moment.

But next time, I will need one of those incredible looking chocolates from the shop.  There just won’t be any way to stop me now that I remember what Basel feels like.
