Som Tam (Papaya Salad)

Ingredients (Serves 1): 

  • 1 cup of finely shredded green papaya
  • 1/2 of a tomato cut into four wedges
  • 3 green beans cut into 1 inch pieces 
  • 1 tbsp of dried shrimp 
  • 1 tsp of garlic
  • 1 tbsp of roasted peanuts
  • 2 Thai hot chili peppers 
  • 1-2 lime wedges
  • 1 tbsp of fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp of melted palm sugar
  • Optional: cabbage, extra green beans, or lettuce
Recipe: 
  1. Put the garlic, chili peppers, and green beans into a mortar and pound them just gently enough with the pestle to break them up a little bit. 
  2. Add the fish sauce, palm sugar, and lime juice into the mortar. 
  3. Put the shredded papaya and tomatoes into the mortar and pound on ingredients softly to mix everything up. 
  4. Add the dried shrimp and the roasted peanuts into the mortar and mix everything together with a fork. 
  5. Serve the papaya salad on a plate with either cabbage, green beans, or lettuce.
Additional Info: 
  • Cucumbers can be substituted for green papaya to make a cucumber salad.
