I had heard about the Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna but not the delicious sweets shops, bars and restaurants. How could I not have heard? The Tall Guy is a history buff and gets very excitable and bouncy, despite his years, whenever we're going somewhere whose past has special interest for him. It seems that Ravenna was actually the capital of the western Roman Empire throughout most of the 5th century AD. Yes, I did get a running, or more like a driving, then walking commentary.

The mosaics in churches like the Basilica San Vitale and the mausoleum of Galla Placidia turned out to be more exciting than anticipated. The amount of luster they add to otherwise gloomy interiors of the buildings is sensational. But then I have always loved mosaics and have one rather special piece of an ancient mosaic that I treasure.

Dante's tomb was also well worth a visit, as much for the sensitive little garden beside it as for knowing that this is where Dante rests. And all of these places are within easy walking distance of each other.

This visit took place in November, so the town was not heaving with other tourists, and best of all the shops were full of Christmas things including special Christmas foods.

Leonardi Dolciumi is a sweet shop of such tempting elegance that I found myself drifting through the door without any effort of will on my part. I seemed to have been sucked inside.

I don't really eat a lot of sweets but I am easily seduced by extravagant packaging despite being aware that it is bad for the environment. The packaging and variety of panettone (Italian Christmas cake) was staggering. I immediately contacted my daughter-in-law to find out which was the best one to buy (she's Italian and must be deferred to in all things to do with Italian food). Rather disappointingly, she left me a lot of room to maneuver as the answer was simply..."anything as long it is a classic panettone". She disapproves of going for any modern innovations.

Some of the panettone were wrapped in very Christmassy colors of red or gold, some came in tempting tins and some were simply wrapped in brown paper, but they were all over €20, sometimes well over. When you can buy a less attractively presented panettone for about €7 in the supermarket, the special nature of these offerings is revealed.

As well as the panettone they sell a huge variety of loose sweets, various different chocolate bars including pink peppercorn chocolate, which was delicious and the only thing I ate of the many, many things I bought.

Most of the items slid into Christmas stockings including quirkily packaged cans of seafood such as trout in port wine. Although it is a sweet shop primarily, it is really more of a gourmet food outlet. And there are wines as well.

I do love bustling away from a shop like this wrapped up against the cold, with several giant bags of deliciousness bumping by my side.
