You must have noticed them. Lists, that is. The complexities of life summarized into a set of bullet points for ease of consumption, and the agonies of choice have been whisked away from you and all you have to do is point and say: ”That one...!” Newspapers, magazines and websites; even respectable sites with worthy, thought-provoking content often have a list lurking down at the bottom of the page, just waiting for you: The 10 Worst Liposuction Epic Fails for 2015...and on they go.

Alright, so where’s this going, you may very reasonably be asking by now. Two years ago, I was flattered to find that my lovely Umbrian town, Bevagna, had made the Skyscanner.it list of the 20 most beautiful places in Italy for 2014. Noice, eh! So lists can have their uses in identifying places to go, where to eat and so on. And conversely, lists can also tell you where not to go, and what not to eat (though you don’t see too many of the latter). Recently, a list turned up, outing the 10 worst places to live in Italy. Once of these, the unfortunately named Bastardo, is just 7 kilometers from where I live, which was, if you will recall from above, one of the 20 best. How about that, then? Both the best and the worst, within walking distance of each other; beauty and the beast.

Now, almost exactly equidistant from the beauty of Bevagna and the beastliness of Bastardo is the little hilltop town of Gualdo Cattaneo. (You can locate all three easily on Google Maps or Apple Maps.) Gualdo has always been a very neatly presented little town, but until lately, maybe just a little lacking in 10, or even 1 or 2 reasons to go there, unless it’s to visit friends. I’ve already written on this site about the wonderful “Il Molino” pizzeria just outside the town’s medieval walls. Now Gualdo boasts a very chic little wine bar/restaurant right smack in the centre of its small but delightful Piazza Umberto 1. Enoteca B&B Dadotratto is a great little place to drop into of an evening, for a glass of wine, and the free antipasti laid out for customers to help themselves to. It also has a small adjoining trattoria (it only seats about twelve people) where you can order a light meal, and more wine, if the mood takes you after your aperitivo in the bar area. For the warmer months of the year, the little raised dais outside increases the seating area by an extra 3 tables, but a word of warning: any area outside an Italian eating/drinking establishment is considered a smoking zone.

Dadotratto’s menu is sensibly small – just 3 platters of cheese, preserved meats and seasonal greens as antipasti, 2 primi (pasta dishes, hand-made, of course), 3 secondi (meat/fish/vegetarian mains) and simple dolce consisting of torta (cake) or biscotti with or without coffee and/or digestivi (stomach-settling drinks like limoncello or grappa). Even on a Sunday night, in a decidedly cool March, the little seated restaurant area was full, so if you want to sample what this establishment has to offer by way of ambience and fare, you’d be wise to ring and book your table. I can only imagine this getting even more essential as the warmer weather arrives. An expensive night out? Five of us got through 3 bottles of wine (and good stuff, too, not vino della casa), two mixed antipasti platters for the table and a main (secondi) each. Cost: €25 per person. Going back? Yes, and here are 10 reasons to go back to Dadotratto in Gualdo Cattaneo, Umbria...
