I'll hold my hands up: I'm not a big doughnut person. For about the first 13 years of my life, every doughnut I'd tried was too sweet, sugary and doughy, and just made me feel a bit ill. Then, one day my life changed: the day I stepped into the original Krispy Kreme store in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA.

I'll admit that I was sceptical. Why should these doughnuts be different from any others that I'd ever tried before? Boy, did I have my mind changed.

I was visiting family at the time, who took me to this Krispy Kreme branch on a day out. The first thing that struck me was how open and visible the cooking process was. Behind the counter I could see Krispy Kreme staff working away busily. I could see the small, insipid hoops that were the beginnings of doughnuts, sitting waiting on conveyor belts. I could see the conveyor belts moving through the ovens, the little rings growing and becoming more golden. I saw racks and racks of them, eventually being drizzled with sugary glaze, ready for purchase.

Little did I realise that my family had mentioned to the staff that I was visiting from England, and it was my first time in a Krispy Kreme store. Before I knew what was happening, one of the ladies who worked there reached over, used a spare piece of greaseproof paper to pick up a hot doughnut straight off the conveyor belt, and handed it to me.

I bit into it, and I was in enlightened. Those Krispy Kreme doughnuts were like no others on Earth. No sooner had I taken a bite out of my doughnut than it melted in my mouth, a sweet, hot, soft ring of heaven. Since that day, I've never looked back!

We visited that store several more times before my trip was up (even having them for breakfast and going for late night doughnut runs). It was only some time later that I learned that Krispy Kreme is much older than I had realised. This store in North Carolina was the first one to be opened, way back in 1937 - that's 77 years ago!

Nowadays, they have over 100 stores in 21 different countries around the world. Krispy Kreme doughnuts have to be spreading like wildfire for a reason, right? To this day, they're the only doughnuts that I'll eat and enjoy. Of course, my favourite is always the original glazed version, but they have a multitude of different flavours and fillings on offer.

As far as I've tasted, the Krispy Kreme doughnuts which you can buy from their shops and stalls around the world are never quite as good as those which you can eat straight off the conveyor belt in their original store. Despite this, they are without doubt the best doughnuts in the world. If you can suggest any doughnuts which you think are better than Krispy Kremes, I love to hear them!
