Scotland has long held an affiliation with France and anyone visiting Edinburgh will find a profusion of delightful places to enjoy French cuisine. Here are some of the best places to go in town to eat fine French food.

La Barantine

Located in Bruntsfield Place the small cafe is full of beautiful cakes, bread and pastry and the smells of France hit as you walk through the door. Enjoy coffee and macarroons here or a delicious pastry.

L'Escargot Blanc

This fine French restaurant has been on Queenferry Road in Edinburgh for ober 20 years. It combines those distinctive French flavours and recipes with the availability of high quality Scottish food producing some superb dishes. It has a lovely atmosphere too and is good without being pretentious.

La Garrigue

Tucked away on Jeffrey Street this delightful French restaurant is just off the Royal Mile. It specialises in traditional family recipes and produces hearty French cuisine. La Garrigue has won awards for its cooking and the lunch special is worth looking out for if visiting Edinburgh.The cassoulet is particularly worth tasting.

Cafe Marlayne

Specialising in traditional French bistro cooking Cafe Marlayne is located in Antigua Street in Edinburgh. Making the most of locally sourced food this popular restaurant creates some delicious menu items. There's also another branch of Cafe Marlayne in Thistle Street. They are different in style but the food is the star of the show.

Chez Jules

Chez Jules is another popular French restaurant on Hannover Street in Edinburgh. It has a traditional menu with some of the classic bistro dishes and is close to the shopping centres and bars. This place has daily specials and its cuisine is renowned. The daily set menu is another bargain that attracts diners to Chez Jules.

Maison Bleue

You can't miss the distinctive Maison Bleue on Victoria Street. This is a really popular place to eat in the Old Town and is close to Grassmarket. On the menu there are the classic French dishes as well as specials and set menus. The bouchees are the French equivalent of tapas and perfect for sharing. There are also pre theatre meals for those attending festivals and there's always a warm welcome at Maison Bleue.

Pierre Victoire

Located on Eyre Street the Pierre Victoire restaurant is an excellent find. This is full of traditional French specialties and like many places across Edinburgh, makes the most of local food. There are some superb dishes on the menu here from frog's legs to Coq au Vin and the famous daily specials.

French cuisine can be found throughout Edinburgh and there are some wonderful places to escape the grey skies and taste a little piece of France. Do check them out when you next visit Edinburgh.
