Inle Lake is renowned for its fishermen who row with one leg, but the floating gardens are another delight. Located in a corner of this vast expanse of water, Inle Lake's Floating Gardens are a labyrinth of canals where some of the tastiest vegetables in Burma grow.

Anyone sailing on Inle Lake will see water hyacinths everywhere. The roots were constantly clogging up the waterways but villagers put them to another use. Spreading root beds with chicken dung and silt, a fertile bed suitable for growing food was created. Locals row between gardens, weeding, harvesting, and dodging pythons who have found a new home amongst the tomatoes. Today Inle Lake produces 30% of all the tomatoes grown in Burma and the scent of the salads is remarkable.

Boats speed between villages and the main towns, trading tomatoes, onions, salads, and fruits for other commodities. There are floating restaurants here too and local tilapia fish stuffed with herbs is highly recommended. With local tomatoes as a garnish the food has travelled just a few steps to the plate. Sail up in a longboat to any one of the floating restaurants, find a table, place your order, and dine on the freshest of food. This is a timeless place to explore, but do go with all five senses to taste, smell, see, and feel the food grown here and to enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
