I grew up in Northern Virginia, but I spent every summer of my youth in upstate New York. My grandma owns a cottage on the south end of Skaneateles Lake, one of New York's Finger Lakes. Summers, for me, were defined by quiet days swimming and long nights playing card games. And, without fail, we would get dressed up at least once each summer and head to the Glen Haven.

The Glen Haven doesn't belong to me, but it's a part of me nonetheless. I've had plenty of family members work there over the summer and I've even spent a few afternoons there washing dishes and prepping food. Growing up I was on a first name basis with the wait staff. Every time I see them they'll tell me how much I've grown and ask me all about the current goings on in my life. Many of the servers will tell stories about how they see families return over the summers and how fun it is to watch kids grow up year after year.

My family connection is only a small part of the reason I love the Glen Haven. The truth is that the Glen Haven has views that are impossible to beat and food that is pretty incredible. It's a place completely without pretensions, with a jovial spirit, and where its customers find a sense of serenity. Eating on the deck on the Glen Haven is like being told a secret that few are privy to. In an isolated area and as a seasonal restaurant very few individuals have the opportunity to discover it, but those that do find it to be a place to return to time and time again - a hidden jewel of Skaneateles Lake.

It's menu, though short and sweet, has plenty of tantalizing options:

My favorites:

  • Appetizers - Baked Brie en Croute
  • Dinner Entrees - Deviled Steak or the Cranberry-Pecan Chicken
  • Dessert - The World Famous Mud Spud

I also have been going to the Glen Haven since the late 50's. But the most interesting part of this story was the name of the person who wrote it, Ryan Dickerson. His family bought my great grandfather's old farm that ran from Morris Run down to the lake where the little one room cabin is. This cabin was built by my Great Uncle, my father and his cousin. This farm property was owned by the Morris family from the late 1800's until the Dickerson family bought it around 1960. Donald Hobart
