I remember the first time I tried an Indian curry.  It was years ago (and I do mean years ago) at an upscale restaurant in Paddington, London.  The range and depth of flavours were incredible; it was surprisingly intricate even though it looked like it was simply meat in sauce.  From the first bite, I was hooked.

Living in South Africa, it’s easy to get your fill of Indian.  From Durban-styled Bunny Chows to more traditional curries, you can really cross the range of Indian cuisine in South Africa.  But, I’ve always wondered whether the first curry that I had was the best because it was new – or if it was simply one of the best curries.  I had assumed I had just become desensitised, and this is what was running through my mind as we walked to Mandir Indisches Restaurant near the Spalentor in Basel.

I’d been promised that Mandir was something special – and so it was.  From the intricately designed tables and the very happy, personal service that we received, the restaurant really delivered.  There were five of us at the table, and we all ordered something a little different, from a lamb korma to a Madagascar fish curry.  It’s simply the best way to handle the intense flavours of most curry restaurants.

Each bite was superb, increasing in flavour and rich, creamy deliciousness.  I almost felt a little guilty adding rice to my meal, as I didn’t want to become too full too quickly.  But, of course, I couldn’t help myself.  That’s just the way it goes sometimes, right?

As satiation hit, my boyfriend and I put on our coat for a quick walk around the block.   It was, after all, a neighbourhood that I remembered from years ago.  I reminisced over the time I spent in Basel more than a decade ago as the winter wind chilled my face.  Back in the restaurant, rejoining the rest of our group, I felt overwhelming warmth.  It was time to head back for the night, but somehow, that curry connected the dots of the years of my life.  It’s amazing the memories that good food can trigger, isn’t it?
