I’ll be honest, perhaps too honest.  London is too big for me.  It’s not just London, of course.  I feel the same way about New York, Paris and even Johannesburg.  I like my cities smaller, but I still want all the perks of restaurants, arts and events.  (That explains why I can’t get enough of Geneva and Washington DC, right?)

Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate visiting London, albeit not for long.  But, staying in London itself is difficult for me.  So, it’s a good job that my best friends in London have a place out in Surrey, around the corner from Hampton Court.  And here’s what I love about riding that train line from the city out to the ‘burbs – everything starts to feel a little more, well, English.  You get all the good pubs without all the crowds.

After a long day in the big, bad city, I was excited (and after a few stops at pubs in town – a bit tipsy) to get back to what I consider normalcy.  Better still, dinner at the Prince of Wales pub was on offer.  That was exciting for me.  It’s not that I knew anything about the place or that it had been on the tips of everyone’s mouth for the whole day.   I was excited because not only do I fantasize about writing a novel after walking through morning mists of the Hampton Court gardens; I’ve truly enjoyed every Surrey pub I’ve ever been in.

I don’t know if it’s the service, or just that you know what you’re in for, and that means you can relax.  In the case of my night at the Prince of Wales Pub, I think it might have been this gorgeous and undeniably delicious burger.  I know, I know – you’re supposed to order a pie or something like that.  But still, I wanted a burger, and it was totally worth it.  Of course, those that ordered the pies were delighted with their meals.  And that’s just it, isn’t it?  That’s what’s so wonderful about Surrey.  You can always find something perfect.
