As well as being the month of love, February also marks my birthday! To some people, birthdays are just like any other day, but to me it’s a chance to treat myself to something a little bit special and out of the ordinary. To mark love month here at Eat the Globe, it’s time to take a look at one of the restaurants that I love the most.

This year, I decided to celebrate with my family by having a meal out at one of my favourite restaurants: Gourmet Burger Kitchen. As the name suggests, this is a place where you get high class burgers. These aren’t any old meat patties slapped in a stale bun. Instead, these are some of the most indulgent, delicious, mouth-watering burgers known to man.

Unfortunately there are only 63 branches of this chain so far this might sound like quite a few, but they are mostly located around the big cities like London. For a country bumpkin like me, this meant a bit of a journey to get to burger heaven. Luckily, the food is totally worth the journey.

Inside the restaurant, there is a really upbeat, social vibe. There are some standard tables to seat couples, families or groups; there are some booths with bench-like seats; there are even some long tables where different groups can be seated right next to each other. Sitting elbow-to-elbow with another family isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s all part of the experience. Of course, if you book a table early and put in a special request, there’s always a chance that you can secure your favourite table!

You do have to place your order at the counter (just like at Nando’s), which means that there are constantly people getting up and moving around. This just adds to the lively, busy, youthful air which is what makes the place so brilliant.

The wonderful people at Gourmet Burger Kitchen don’t just let you sit idle while you wait for your burgers to be prepared. They have big barrels full of peanuts; you’re allowed to fill a cup full of peanuts to chomp through while you wait. These are peanuts still in their shells, so once again the whole eating experience becomes very interactive as you have to crack them open to eat!

Glance over the menu and you won’t be surprised to see that it’s just bursting with delicious burgers of all different types. It’s true that there are plenty of different beef burgers, but they soon move onto the more exotic. Their wide variety of burgers includes fillings such as chicken (grilled or breaded), fish, buffalo, Persian lamb, and pork and chorizo to name but a few. Ive visited on a number of special occasions and tried something new every time, and I can honestly say that Ive never even come close to being disappointed. These burgers are simply magnificent!

The brioche buns are light and tasty, the meats are juicy and flavoursome, the sauces are rich and vibrant and there isnt a hint of limp, drab lettuce in sight. These burgers actually arrive at your table looking like they do in the pictures, which is a rare sight, indeed!

However, the burgers aren’t the only things on the menu that are spectacular. The side dishes are just as good, if not better. In particular, I recommend the sweet potato fries and the onion rings, which are all so moreish it’s unbelievable. I’ve enjoyed so many dishes from the Gourmet Burger Kitchen that I’ve even tried to replicate some of them in my own kitchen, but no matter how hard I try it just doesn’t come close to matching their awesomeness.

As with most good restaurants, they also offer a great range of drinks, including some slightly original options. Their selection of milkshakes is amazing: there are loads of flavours to come from, and they all come packed with chunky bits to keep the flavours rich and authentic the whole way through. The best part is that they come served in enormous silver cups, so you definitely get your money’s worth! I’m not normally much of a milkshake drinker, but these are some of the best I’ve ever had.

The only drawback I can see to Gourmet Burger Kitchen is that they don’t do starters or desserts. This is the place to go if you want a burger (an incredible burger, at that) and not a lot else youll have to move elsewhere if you want ice cream or something similar afterwards! Quite frankly, Im being picky here. The burgers really are fantastic, and they dont leave you feeling empty or wanting for more in any way. It wasnt until I returned home that I realised that desserts hadnt even been an option on the menu, so its certainly not something that I felt like I was missing out on at the time.

All things considered, the prices at Gourmet Burger Kitchen are very reasonable. Most main courses only come to just over a tenner including an enormous burger and a plentiful portion of fries on the side. For the quality that you receive it really is very good value, much better than many of the other high street chain restaurants which are aimed at a similar market.

Overall, I can’t recommend Gourmet Burger Kitchen highly enough. I’ve already been to see them several times and I will definitely return again. I’ve never had a bad experience; the members of staff have always been great, and the atmosphere is really upbeat. These guys have a brilliant online presence, as well, so head on over to visit them on social media they even run regular competitions, so there’s a chance you could win burgers on the house! Everything else aside, the best and most important thing about Gourmet Burger Kitchen is that all the food and drinks especially the burgers really are fantastic. This is the restaurant I love, and soon you will too!
