Nestled in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside is the tiny, quaint village of Collingbourne Ducis (pronounced 'Deuce - s'). Around half an hour's drive between the towns of Andover and Marlborough, it is hidden away from the rest of the world. Collingbourne Ducis is a quintessential English town, with a river running through it and thatched roofs aplenty. Of course, the one thing that a typical English village needs is a local pub, and Collingbourne Ducis doesn't disappoint - The Tipple Inn is located in the heart of the village.

When you're driving through the village, you can't miss The Tipple Inn, as it's located at the edge of the main road, just off a small roundabout. Around the back it has plenty of parking, as well as a large grassy area with picnic benches and bench seats for relaxing outdoors.

The first time I ever stopped at The Tipple Inn was my first time in the area, as well. In a small village such as that, everyone knows each other, and the regulars at the pub become well acquainted. Needless to say, on walking in, I felt like a real outsider. There were plenty of patrons already in the pub (which is always a good sign), but it seemed like everyone had gone silent and stopped to look at the newbies. This probably wasn't the case, but it was the impression we got, and I'm sure that if we visited more regularly we'd begin to feel right at home! I will admit that the owners have always been very friendly, helpful and accommodating.

On that occasion, we sat at a table near the bar. In terms of decor it's very much what you'd expect from a typical English pub, with its low ceilings and beams.

However, I have been back since, and have seen a whole different side to The Tipple Inn that I hadn't realised even existed. If you enter from the carpark at the back, before you reach the bar, tucked away on the right hand side is a small, inconspicuous door...which leads to a whole other section of the building! This area is set out much more like a restaurant, with tables and chairs. It is a lot more light, both in terms of decor and atmosphere, so I've never felt out of place here as I did at the bar.

Despite my differing experiences, the one thing that has always remained constant is the food. I have visited in both deepest, darkest winter and the hottest days of summer, and the food has always been exactly what I've needed! From warm, hearty pub grub to light sandwiches and salads, The Tipple Inn has a great range of foods on offer. It's never going to be haute cuisine, but it's exactly what you'd expect from a pub, and you get what you pay for. The prices are very reasonable; a friend and I recently had lunch there, and our two large portions, two drinks and a side dish came to around £20.

As I say, I've stopped at The Tipple Inn with friends, and I've also been with family, including babies. I've seen people there on their own, and I've seen groups of older people having lunch. This isn't a pub which is suited to just one sector within society - it's appropriate for anyone to visit, regardless of age, gender or occasion!

All in all, The Tipple Inn is a wonderful little English pub, which offers everything you'd expect. It is very much a locals' pub, but with the addition of the hidden restaurant type area round the back, it caters for newcomers as well, feeling very friendly and welcoming. If you want to visit somewhere far away from the rat race and have a taste of what English countryside villages are really like, then venture to Collingbourne Ducis for a true pub experience.
