ETG - Food For Thought

In case you did not know, our two favorite activities are eating good food and travelling. When these two are combined, we can definitely scream from the top of our lungs that we are as happy as we can be. If you are like us and you love to try different cuisines from all over the world during your vacation, check this list of the best travel destinations for foodies and start planning your next trip.

Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is a top destination for foodies from all over the world. Japan is renowned worldwide for its Michelin starred restaurants and Tokyo is the city you can find most of them. Japanese cuisine is absolutely incredible and it is best to experience it in Tokyo where you can indulge in decadent meals in fancy restaurants or in a relaxed pub atmosphere.

While visiting Tokyo, you will realize that Japanese cuisine has many things to offer besides sushi. Not that you didn’t know that, but when you are in Tokyo you will be in owe of the numerous seafood dishes and side dishes you can try. Tokyo is definitely a dream for every foodie so if you can, you should start planning your trip now.

Zurich, Switzerland

If you plan to visit Switzerland you have to stop in Zurich to experience birchermuesli, the traditional healthy breakfast served everywhere in the city. We also recommend trying rosti, the Swiss potatoes pancakes, alongside a traditional meat dish, such as Züri-Geschnetzeltes. If you are a fan of fruity cakes, you have to try the ones you will find in Zurich’s cafes and restaurants. However, if you think visiting Zurich to experience Swiss cuisine is enough, think again! If you are a cheese lover, Appelzeller, the northeastern region of the country is a must! The spicy local cheese is something you should certainly try. After all, Switzerland is not renowned for its cheese and chocolate for nothing. Speaking of chocolate, Kilchberg is the place to be if you want to visit the Lindt chocolate factory. The LINDT Chocolate Shop allows you to try different types of chocolate and to create your own chocolate bar with your favorite ingredients. Chocolate lovers will enjoy their visit at the factory!

New York, USA

Do you want to spend your days off in a lively city that has various experiences to offer in terms of food? Then New York is definitely for you! The fine dining scene is always changing and embracing new trends and you can experience some incredible innovative dishes, but also some classic ones that will always be around. Nonetheless, New York is also the place where you can find delicious street food. From waffles and other sweets treats to tacos and grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs, the city’s street food stalls will satisfy your hunger while you explore the touristic attractions. Street food and fine dining? Why not, if you ask us! After all, travelling should involve different experiences and embracing various lifestyles. And, since we are talking about New York, the city where approximately 8 million people of the city’s population are immigrants from all around the globe, you can discover as many new dishes and cuisines as you please.

New Orleans, USA

While we are in the USA (not physically, but mentally dreaming about the delicious food) we have to talk about New Orleans! The melting pot of African, American and French cultures offers so many amazing options for foodies that we don’t know where to start. If you always wanted to experience the spicy and delicious Creole cuisine, New Orleans is the best city for a vacation. Also, be ready to impress your taste buds with incredible seafood, such as lobster and fried oysters. The fusion chefs in the city love to be creative and if you love to be surprised, you will love New Orleans. The street food is also something you cannot say no to while visiting New Orleans. Even though Beignets are from France, the ones you will find in New Orleans are better (sorry France, we still love you!) and they are a breakfast staple in the city.

Berlin, Germany

From USA we are heading back to Europe to talk about other amazing countries, cities and their cuisines. The first stop is Berlin, the capital of Germany where you can explore the diverse and delicious German Cuisine. From the famous German sausages to the incredible strudels, pretzels and cakes, Berlin has many things to offer to those who are ready to indulge in decadent food without counting calories. Germany is dedicated to using local ingredients so you can know for sure that the food in your plate is made with fresh, seasonal ingredients all year long. In case you are not familiar with German cuisine but you would like to familiarize yourself with it before visiting Germany, check this article that we wrote during our German Cuisine Month.

Paris, France

We cannot talk about food destinations without talking about Paris even though every foodie knows Paris is an amazing destination for exploring the French cuisine. French cuisine is addictive and, even if you are not a fan of the fine dining dishes, you will surely find something to love about it.

If you want to discover French cheese from all over the country, you can visit a cheese shop that will allow you to smell, taste and buy different kinds of delicious French cheeses. Also, if you are a cheese aficionado, you have to attend a cheese and wine tasting!

Chocolate lovers will have the best time of their lives in Paris since they can discover some of the best truffles, pralines and other chocolate treats in the world. Debauve et Gallais is a must for those who want to learn more about France’s love affair with chocolate. Debauve et Gallais is one of the oldest chocolate shops in Paris that sells amazing chocolate for more than 200 years.

Paris is not necessarily renowned for its street food, most tourists and Parisians prefer to enjoy a treat in a café or a restaurant however, you cannot say no to a crepe from Paris’ streets. Sweet or savory, the crepes you will buy from the streets of Paris are the best crepes you can buy. French patisserie is also a must! You cannot visit Paris without enjoying a croissant next to a good coffee. There are numerous cafes and patisseries in Paris that will be ready to introduce you to the deliciousness of French patisserie so you simply cannot refuse the opportunity.

We can go on and on about French cuisine and Paris  but we have other cities and cuisines to explore in this article so we will end our Paris talk saying that if you can afford a visit to a fine dining restaurant in Paris, don’t say no!

Bologna, Italy

Italian cuisine is considered by many foodies the best cuisine in the world and we have to agree that Italy’s delicious dishes are hard to beat. While France is amazing when it comes to fine dining dishes and patisserie, Italy is best at… well, everything. If you want to experience the best of the best Italian food, you have to visit Bologna! Some of Italy’s most famous food staples (the Bolognese sauce, the baloney sausage, and mortadella, to name a few) originated in Bologna.

The capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy has numerous options for foodies who want to taste its delicious food. From street markets to fine dining restaurants and simple trattorias, Bologna has an option for every tourist who wants to experience its food. The food is always fresh since most of the ingredients are from Bologna or nearby cities. If you visit Bologna, eating Spaghetti Bolognese is not recommended, it is a must!

Fez, Morocco

When you hear Morocco, you probably think that Marrakech is the place to visit. However, Fez, the Moroccan city usually referred to as Morocco’s cultural capital, has many more culinary experiences to offer than Marrakech. There are many place to eat in Fez and tourists can also join cookery classes where they can learn to make traditional Moroccan dishes, such as tagines and harira soup. If you prefer to experience Moroccan cuisine dining at a restaurant, there are plenty you can choose from and street food is also an option.

Mumbai, India

India’s foodie capital, Mumbai, is the best place to visit if you love spicy and delicious food. The aromas and spices of Europe, Middle East and East Asia melted together and created a unique taste that is hard to find elsewhere.  The street food scene offers cheap but amazing options for foodies who love to explore the local food. Kebab and curry are probably the most popular options you can find on the streets of Mumbai but sweets also have a special place in Mumbaikars’ hearts. Sea food is also loved in Mumbai and if you are a fan too, make sure you try the delicious crab dishes or the jumbo prawns with green pepper sauce.

There are plenty of restaurants you can go to if street food is not your thing. The restaurants are also into various types of curry and kebab but also fusion dishes and traditional Indian dishes.
