ETG - Food For Thought

One article is not enough when you want to talk about the best travel destinations for foodies so we decided to write three. In case you missed the part 1 of our Travel Destinations - A Foodie's Guide, go ahead and read it and stay tuned for part 3! As we did in part 1, in this article we will talk about 9 foodie destinations from all over the world, we will discover the best local dishes, we will explore some of the most popular restaurants in the cities but we will also discover the local street food scene.

Barcelona, Spain

The first foodie destination we will talk about today is Barcelona. Barcelona is a fast-paced city but food is still important and locals love to enjoy their meals without rushing through them. While eating your lunch in the city, you will see the eateries and restaurants filled with people that are enjoying their lunch break.

Barcelona is the place where you will discover incredible Catalan dishes that are flavorful and delicious but also a variety of Mediterranean dishes. In Barcelona there are less tapas bars than in the rest of Spain because people of Barcelona prefer raciones for snacking. Raciones include various cheeses, cured meats and pâtés. However, if you really want to visit a tapas bar, you will find a few very good ones in Barcelona.

Breakfast in Barcelona includes coffee and a croissant or a doughnut, but there are other options if you prefer a savory and more filling breakfast. Bocadillo, a roll filled with cheese and grilled meat, is one of your options. You can also find a place that serves combinados, combination plates with fried eggs, French fries and bacon or steak.

Lunch and dinner are important meals in Barcelona and if you want to discover traditional Catalan dishes you should visit one of Barcelona’s best Catalan restaurants. If you prefer Mediterranean food, head towards Barceloneta where you will find numerous places to eat. There are also numerous fusion Mediterranean establishments in the city where you can eat Mexican-Mediterranean or Middle Eastern-Mediterranean dishes.

As for street food, visit Boqueria, a local market, where you can find numerous stalls with local food and products.

Panama City, Panama

Panama is a great destination if you want to discover unique dishes created with tropical plants and fruits. Panama cuisine uses maize, rice, plantains, beef and corvine as their main ingredients for the traditional dishes.

Panama City is the most exciting destination for foodies in Central America, the culinary scene is diverse and there are numerous restaurants and food trucks in the city where you can enjoy good, tasty food at affordable prices. You can also find restaurants that serve reinvented local dishes with French vibes or other European influences.

The street food scene attracts a varied clientele that loves the taste of the local dishes. If you visit the food stalls, expect everything from fish dishes to different types of homemade curries.

Akyaka, Turkey

Istanbul is on every foodie’s travel destinations map, so instead of talking about it, we will talk about Akyaka, a small town situated in southwestern Turkey that is very peaceful and slow-paced.

The unique culture and architecture of the city are truly remarkable and the small town has a lot to offer to foodies who are ready to discover new and amazing tastes and flavors. The food in Akyaka is mainly based on fish and vegetables, served at the numerous restaurants along the river. As for dessert, expect the best Turkey halva and other Turkish traditional desserts that are so loved by foodies.

Penang, Malaysia

If you plan to visit Malaysia, you have to eat at the numerous food stalls you will find in Penang and other Malaysian cities. Penang is considered Malaysia’s food capital for more than one reason. The food is very cheap, the mix of cuisine is impressive (Indian, Thai, Malay and Chinese are the most popular cuisines in Penang) and Penang is basically the land of soup. From pork and duck to shrimp and pork and for noodles and fish balls to vegetable soups, there are infinite options for people of Penang and the city’s tourists.

Lyon, France

With all due respect to Paris, Lyon is France’s foodie capital and one of the best food cities recognized internationally for its fine cuisine and high-quality wines. The top quality regional products are what makes Lyon’s food so incredibly tasty. Fish from Savoy, the best pork in the region, Bresse chickens and Bresse Bleu fromage are just some of the main ingredients in Lyonnaise cuisine.

Lyon is renowned for its rustic, rich French dishes that are unique and perfect for adventurous foodies. Chicken cooked inside a pig’s bladder, pig’s blood cooked like a custard, pig brain with vinaigrette and numerous other creative foods are all over Lyon. If you prefer a more conservative approach to French cuisine, you can try the smoky pork sausages with pistachio, the foie gras and the numerous desserts Lyon is famous for, such as Coussin de Lyon, Les bugnes and Tarte Praline. Coussin de Lyon is a chocolate and marzipan dessert, les bugnes, also known as Angel Wings, are a traditional sweet crisp pastry shaped like ribbons, deep fried and topped with sugar and tarte praline is the city’ signature pink tart. And since we mentioned dessert, we also have to talk about the other sweet treats you can find in Lyon. The boulangeries, patisseries and chocolatiers sell absolutely incredible treats.

Lyon is also home to prestigious indoor and outdoor markets where you can find the best regional products. You can also eat lunch or dinner there.

If all these reasons are not enough for you, we have to tell you that Lyon is also home to many top chefs that contribute to the culinary reputation of the city. And last but not least, Lyon is the only place in the world where you can find bouchon, a unique type of restaurant part of Lyonnaise history that is usually family-owned and serves only specific dishes (heavy homemade foods based on very old recipes). Bouchons have a unique décor and also a distinctive atmosphere.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The best place to explore Scandinavian cuisine is Copenhagen. Noma (the restaurant that started the New Nordic move), a world renowned restaurant plus other 15 Michelin-starred restaurants are in the city. Now, if you are not familiar with the New Nordic move, let us tell you some things about it. Pioneered by Noma’s chef, the New Nordic cuisine means high-quality seasonal and local ingredients in creative dishes.

Besides this great food trend, Copenhagen is also the place where gourmet food turned mainstream thanks to the chefs that opened simplified gourmet restaurants that do not compromise on quality.

Those of you who are not fans of fancy restaurants can visit the streets of Copenhagen to discover the street food scene and to indulge in simple, comfort food dishes with a Scandinavian vibe but also discover authentic international food. From Scandinavian sandwiches to Italian pizza and from Mexican tacos to shawarma, Copenhagen’s food stalls sell a variety of great international foods.

Vegan and vegetarian cuisines experienced a massive growth during the last couple of years and there are numerous restaurants in Copenhagen that serve only vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Santiago, Chile

The Chilean cuisine gained attention worldwide for its traditional dishes made with rare, seasonal, local ingredients. The young chefs from Chile took inspiration from Europe and Peru and created a culinary mix of delicious flavors.

From gourmet tours to delicious street food, Santiago offers numerous delicious experiences to foodies. You have to try the empanadas sold at street stalls all around the city but you also have to visit some of the city’s restaurants to test dishes that represent Chile’s culinary heritage. Churrasco and Chacarero (Chilean Steak Sandwiches) and the seafood dishes are a must!

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Food is a huge part of Vietnamese culture, it seems like family life in Vietnam revolves around food. From street food to eateries, Ho Chi Minh impresses foodies with the tasty traditional dishes. You should start your day in the city with banh mi with fried egg, a classic breakfast sandwich, enjoy a com tam (a rice dish) for lunch, explore the city then stop for dinner and enjoy other Vietnamese dishes. You should definitely order a local beer with your Vietnamese food. If you are afraid of the risk of eating street food, look for a place where locals eat. Those places have a wide clientele for a reason. You can also pick a place where you can see the cooks preparing your food.

Louisville, Kentucky, USA

USA has numerous places for foodies and Louisville is just one of them, but one of the best if you ask us. The culinary scene evolved rapidly during the last years and now tourists who love food can dine in the city in elegant establishments but also in simple and casual pubs and restaurants.

The traditional Southern recipes were reinvented and have become gourmet dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients that are flavorful and healthy. Eating in Louisville is not an expensive affair and the talented chefs that live in the city don’t compromise on quality. Besides the traditional Southern dishes, you can also find numerous places that sell international cuisine dishes. And, since we’re talking about a Southern US city here, don’t forget to try the desserts! USA’s south has a sweet tooth and you shouldn’t say no to the classic cookies or to the Modjjekas, fluffy marshmallows and caramel, the signature sweet treats of  Muth’s Candy.
