Some trips you plan for, spending hours poring over the details of subway maps and restaurant options.  When you arrive, you know where you need to go, how to get there, what you want to see and what you plan to eat.

My recent trip to Berlin was nothing like that.  I knew two days before leaving that I was taking my two boys (8 and 10, at the time) for a weekend in Germany.  I had a hotel room, and 48 hours to show them... well, anything I wanted really.  I just had to figure out what that was.

After a day of traipsing through the city as if we owned it, we returned to our hotel to unload our spoils before finding a spot for dinner.  Propeller Island Hotel, near the Audenauerplatz, is a winner and a half; they offer excellent (almost self) service and exceptionally clean, creative rooms.  (Check out the Two Lions suite where we stayed.)

Then it was time to eat.  But, a decision had to be made first – satisfy one child’s desire for Italian, my need to soak in the sausages, or my baby’s absolute love of sushi.  All three options are available on, or near, the Audenauerplatz, but somehow the unassuming gravity of Tokyo-Haus pulled us in.  And we were all surprised – it was the best Teppanyaki we’ve ever had – and my sushi lover was impressed enough to consider spending the night at the Tokyohaus, rather than sleeping in a lion cage.  Not only did we have an accomplished chef, but the quality of the food was superb.  Everything was extraordinarily fresh, and the sushi was immaculately prepared.  The staff were prepared to let me stumble along in my broken, basic German though I could see they would’ve appreciated a quick switch to my native tongue.

Of course, we did follow this up with a walk in the other direction to an Italian place, Trattoria Salento, where the boys ordered hot chocolates, and I warmed my weary body with a large glass of Chianti.  Unfortunately, we had already gorged ourselves on Japanese food, so we were unable to sample the Italian delights on offer, though we would have returned the next evening for dinner if I hadn’t insisted on eating at one of the local pubs (just next door to Tokyo-Haus).  The Xantener Eck was everything I needed to cure my craving for local German pub food.  Service came with a smile, and the portion sizes were slightly more than we expected.  Although it was a pub, my children felt at home enough to ask for mustard in (less than impressive) German.  The presence of menus in every language does suggest they cater to the tourist crowd, but the food (and beer) is still authentic.

All in, the Audenauerplatz is worth your time if you want quality cuisine (from around the world), at real prices.  And truly, that hotel is worth a look.

Oh - and if you just want a quick look at what's on offer, all of these restaurants feature their menus on their websites (and, yes... I did eat my fill of sausages!)
