Yatais (outdoor food stall/stands) are a unique part of the food culture of Hakata. The cosy feeling of sitting in a small food stand is worth experiencing. But don't be fooled by the rustic look of these stands, they can be quite expensive to eat at, especially the seafood stands.

We decided to try some ramen and grilled scallops. We walked down a main strip of yatais along the river around the Nakasu area. We came across a friendly ramen place towards the end. The ramen serving was a nice snack size, not too filling, which was perfect. Also the noodles were thinner than usual, I believe it is a fusion of Japanese and Chinese noodles. The soup base was flavoursome but light, I managed to finish the ramen in no time.

Now that we had finished our snack...we walked along the yatais to find a seafood grill stand. We came across a stand towards the front with a yellow sign and it was packed inside, so we sat on some seatings just outside the stall. The waiter came over and took our order: 2 large scallops, butter grilled. We admired the river views as we waited for our scallops...

In a brief moment, the scallops arrived at our table, they were very big, the meat was very dense and juicy; the butter sauce went well and was not overpowering. It was not a cheap meal, though, the scallops were $1000 yen each...but it was worth it.

Yatais are now symbolic of Hakata/Fukuoka, however, as society changes, these stall owners are battling with local councils to survive, here's an interesting article discussing the future of yatais: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20070908f3.html
