Every time I head off to the States, I spend time looking at coupons online. I look at grocery coupons and restaurant coupons. I check out Groupon deals and consider all the specials I can before leaving. It’s part of that whole budget travel thing (which is always my plan even when it doesn’t go that way).

I don’t know if it’s a thing all over the US, but in Northeast Ohio, there seems to be an unlimited number of independent Mexican restaurants. I need to use the word Mexican lightly, as the meals aren’t exactly Mexican. They’re sort of Mexican. Whatever the food is, there are always coupons for these places.

And, I love Mexican – even places that are sort of Mexican.

It’s a little surprising that I never stop in at these establishments. I love Mexican, and I love coupons. My kids are getting into south of the border foods too. It’s a recipe for success, right?

Even though I look at the coupons online and see them in the mailers scattered across my mom’s kitchen table, I never bother. I don’t know why. Strangely, I don’t even cut out the coupons to carry around with me.

And then, it happened. The kids and I were at a friend’s place and the afternoon opened up in a strange way, so we all decided to go to Don Tequila around the corner. (I didn’t have a coupon on me. Bummer.)

The first thing I noticed was the décor. It was cheesy, but not terribly so. Each booth has its own design, and there are (the almost obligatory) sombreros on the wall. I must say, it adds to the experience rather than detracting from it. Almost instantly, there were corn chips and salsa on the table, and the kids were clamouring for queso. We ordered our drinks and, between conversations, tried to narrow down menu options.

Not having a coupon weighed on my mind, but there were combo plates on the menu, so I tried to get over it. And I did. I decided on something that I felt could be served without cheese (easily) and then we ordered.

To my absolute surprise, the food came out of the kitchen about five minutes later. You have to be wary of that, don’t you? Beans are something you can easily keep on hand, and there are only so many ingredients combined in a limited number of ways on these Mexican menus. But, really?

So, I was a little more than surprised when I devoured my food and wanted more instantly. Indeed, I was thinking about all the coupons sitting on my mom’s kitchen table. And then I started planning another trip to Don Tequila while my kids took crazy pictures by the cut outs in the front of the restaurant.

Next time, I’m just going to plan on it and start searching for coupons as soon as I book my flight. Because, you should be wary of food that’s ready in five minutes, just not at Don Tequila.
