Sometimes the gems are tucked in a pocket of your own neighbourhood.  But, because they’re so unassuming, you could easily find yourself guilty of looking further afield.  It was my boyfriend, actually, that prompted me to head over to Ziggies the first time.  I can be so stubborn sometimes.  But I went to look at the menu when I popped into the grocery store next door.  That’s when I discovered the restaurant has German roots.  And, we all know how I feel about Germany, right?  There’s nothing better.  Well, I guess it’s a tie between Berlin, Geneva and Cleveland.  But, I digress...

This morning, I just needed to get out of the house for a bit.  I wanted to sit in peace to work through the logistics of my upcoming travels.  It’s quite an extensive trip I have planned – Basel, London, Paris and Geneva (sorry Berlin) – and it’s all rather last minute too.  I grabbed my notebook and headed around the corner to Ziggies for some coffee and Früstück.

I sat down, ordered a coffee and perused the menu for the scrummy breakfast I had eaten on my first foray – the aptly named Bauern Früstück.  Once I ordered, I got a little lost on my phone looking at some of the travel apps, which really didn’t help me get organised at all.  But, I didn’t mind.  Sitting in a pleasant courtyard with a delicious breeze flowing past me, I was content.  It’s the kind of feeling you get when all is right with the world... and that was not something I was expecting.  So, I did no planning, and instead, started considering whether I’d come too soon – after all, there is an Oktoberfest event on in a few days.

My breakfast was absolutely perfect when it arrived.  The way these little fried potatoes are cooked is just marvellous.  And the bread... oh the bread... perfectly toasty.  It is clear they put a little love into their food.  Plus, it’s such a large portion, that there was plenty to take home for a snack later on in the day.

My service was prompt and friendly (which is, of course, expected everywhere but in South Africa).  And then it was time for me to get some work done.  So, I asked for the bill.

To my surprise, the rich and delectably brewed coffee was not added to the bill.  Yep... It was on the house as I’d ordered a breakfast.  Now, if you happen to be in the neighbourhood, I do suggest swinging past.  And, don’t worry – they’ve got a complete menu, dotted with traditional German cuisine.  You don’t have to order breakfast.  But, it is served all day, so why not?
