We were wandering the streets from the Marktplatz past the Barfüsserplatz on our way to pick up the tram back into Basel Stadt, we needed to eat.  In an ideal world, we would have found the very best Flammekuchen in Basel, which is what I was looking for.  But, it didn’t happen.  That wasn’t Basel’s fault; it was ours.  We were short on time, having ordered an extra beer at the Lällekönig.

We could have stopped for some street food, but those Ueli beers really did mean that lunch needed to be joined with restroom facilities.  And, as we were so pressed for both the bathroom – and a snack before heading to the airport, we just popped into a restaurant for lunch.

Zum Braunen Mutz has some clever branding, but this restaurant is certainly more than that.  For Basel, the prices were rather superb with specials coming in at under CHF 30 – at least at lunchtime.  We ordered a couple more beers and a portion of steak tartar to split.  Both were delicious in the way that everything in Switzerland seems to be.

But, it was the people that really floored us.  The family seated next to us had a young toddler that was really interested in our toast.  He was a pudgy little thing that smiled happily as I handed him a slice.  Behind me was an older woman (and we’re guessing about 90 in the shade), who rolled in on her walker, ordered a coke and promptly proceeded to play a game on her smartphone.  And then there were the four gentlemen seated at a large round table nearby – they appeared to be a fully-styled boy band about 50 years after they made it big.

When you add it together, this is one place you shouldn’t miss when you’re next in Basel.  Indeed, you should make a plan to get yourself into the city just for lunch at Zum Braunen Mutz; I certainly would.
